Perspectives on AC2007

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

Below are a few personal perspectives from some AC 2007 attendees.  Please feel free to add your own and share your conference experience with others.

Wow. What a conference! The first person I want to thank for the Annual Conference is that guy who always seemed to be filling the salad bowl in front of me when I was standing in line for food. What was his name? (Did he ever slow down?) No, seriously, I want to thank all those workshop leaders who seem to be able to teach Astrophysics to children in an hour and make it very practical and easy to learn. No, first, I need to thank Mr. Rohrbach for his 9-hole demonstration of how to play golf with a golf stance as wide as the red sea. (How does he do that?)  Really, Rev. Fulks and the AV guys should be thanked first for being able to balance so many wires/schedules and yet have time to talk about the little things. Wait. I should thank my wife who, with a 4-day-old at home, urged me to come to the conference. Thanks, Michelle.  Above all, I should thank the Lord for guiding me into a wonderful Mission Family like Baptist Mid-Missions.  Wow.  What a conference!

Attending the Annual Conference reminds me a bit of stopping to visit a national park in the middle of a long road trip. Each member of the family has a different need, yet each need is met as the car stops and everyone hops out for a few days. Whether you need to stretch your spiritual legs, see something new (that God is doing in other parts of the world), refuel for ministry, be encouraged through fellowship with the rest of the family, or ponder the work of God, it’s there for you. No one is on display, and nothing is done out of pretense. MK’s look like they’re having the time of their lives. Although you wish you could, you just can’t get around to talk with everyone you’d like to. Simply put, it’s a time for the entire family to be refreshed, re-tooled, and renewed for the future. When all is said and done and you drive off down the road again, things look different, because you’ve seen and felt the hand of God at work. And you can hardly wait for it to happen again.

My husband and I were approved at Candidate School one year ago and since then, our family has led a very different life on deputation. While we are excited to go to Romania, we’re also a little nervous about the changes and challenges we will experience. That’s why it was so good for us to attend the Annual Conference. The workshops helped us learn how to manage our lives during the transition of deputation and the stresses of life, and provided practical information on the real situations we will encounter on a foreign field. The evening services with Pastor Decker were powerful times for us as God used him to inspire, encourage, and strengthen us for these days and the days ahead. The conference also gave us the opportunity to meet other appointees on deputation, as well as veteran missionaries with a wealth of knowledge and varied experiences. It was both comforting and challenging to spend time with other missionaries who are serving the Lord around the world. We’re so thankful that we attended the conference!
